COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS                                        

Community service projects are exceptional opportunities to share special skills and talents with the community and help promote better intercultural understandings and relationships.  Participation in our community service projects are incredible learning opportunities to truly understand Costa Rican culture and use the Spanish language in a very profound and interactive way.  You will leave a lasting impression and mark by helping to provide an important service to the local community and environment. 

Students will have the opportunity to contribute and “make a difference” in the community of Atenas by becoming involved in our many ongoing service learning projects.  The projects are organized in collaboration with established community organizations and initiatives. 

Our current projects include:

ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS
• plant trees in Atenas municipal forest to help with reforestation
• assist with the endangered leatherback turtle egg preservation
• cultivate and harvest coffee, oranges, bananas, mangoes, avocado, tilapia fish at a nearby agricultural farm (click to see photos)
• participate in sustainable organic cooperative farm project
• work together with local municipal improvement projects
• join beach cleaning efforts
• assist with local organic cooperative farm project

Our Spanish & Fun staff will be onsite helping to supervise the projects.  We have a very strong network in the community and would also encourage you to propose a project that you would like to offer and we can work to make it possible.

We will prepare you for your community service project by providing:

• an orientation and general background information about the specific projects
• contacts and introductions with the appropriate people at service project sites
• transportation to and from each project
